Prateek Narsimha
Born in a family of connoisseurs in Benaras, Prateek Narsimha has been studying Hindustani classical music since he was three. He received his initial training in vocal music from the late Mrs Chhaya Chaterjee in Benaras. He continued furthering his understanding of khyaal gayaki under the tutelage of Shri Devashish Dey.
On moving to the University of Delhi for formal studies in Sanskrit and Music, he imbibed the intricacies of the Gwalior Gharana under the loving mentorship of Pt Lakshman Krishnarao Pandit, a senior exponent from the Gharana. Never one to be limited to only formal education, Prateek continues to receive traditional taleem from Dr Ramchandra Bhagwat of Benaras, where he refines his grasp of the subtleties of Khayal and Tappa rendition.
Prateek is a passionate pedagogue, and thoroughly enjoys teaching music to undergraduate students at Gujarat University. He also freelances as a music teacher and voice coach. He has developed a space where he experiments with teaching techniques that are a blend of the traditional and the novel. He trains students nationally and internationally.
As a solo Hindustani classical vocalist of formidable repute, Prateek’s performances have taken him to venues across the country and the globe. Of the many fusion and world music projects that he has contributed to, the Ethno Mobility Grant Concert in Roveredo, Switzerland in 2022 was his most recent. Here, he had the opportunity to collaborate with musicians from across Europe. He has also had several international collaborations to his name, the footprints of which are widely found on YouTube and other streaming platforms.
As a musician who endorses the power and reach of ensemble work, Prateek contributes as lead vocalist to the Delhi based Indian contemporary-classical ensemble, the Anirudh Varma Collective.
A firm believer in the importance of research and scholarship, he is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in music at the Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. He holds the Junior Research Fellowship awarded by the Government of India for research at the University level.
As a PhD scholar committed to understanding the role of music in society, Prateek recently worked as a research consultant for music for a museum development project in Vadnagar, Gujarat spearheaded by the Government of Gujarat.
