Daya Sandhu
Dr. Daya Singh Sandhu is one of the most elite national and international scholars on multiculturalism, diversity, and spirituality in counseling. He holds six graduate degrees and several professional credentials, including the National Certified Counselor, National Certified Clinical Counselor, National Certified School Counselor, and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor-Supervisor. He has over 40 years of extensive experience as a professor and researcher. He has published 17 textbooks and over 125 articles in national and international journals. He has also made more than 250 presentations nationally and internationally.
Dr. Sandhu’s publications and presentations focus on a vast number of themes such as prejudice prevention and reduction, effects of acculturative stress on international students, and equity for women. Most recently, Dr. Sandhu started a watershed movement by introducing “spiritual therapy” in counseling and psychotherapy. This innovative approach integrates spiritual principles and practices with traditional therapeutic methods, thereby offering a holistic and culturally sensitive approach to mental health.
Dr. Sandhu’s Fulbright-Nehru research study is based on the premise that culturally diverse world views which define how individuals conceptualize, act, and attempt to handle crises in their lives, play a crucial role in suicidal ideations and suicides. The project is examining ethnic differences and exploring the implications of culture for the development of new counseling strategies for suicide prevention, treatment, and interventions. This study is mainly focusing on Asian Indian students.
