P. Vetriboopathy

Taal-Mani Shri P. Vetriboopathy is an internationally acclaimed percussionist and one of the most distinguished Mridangam players in the capital. He is the founder of Rudraksham, a unique percussion-string ensemble group empaneled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

A devoted artist, Shri Vetri is the son and a prominent disciple of Kalaimamani Shri Premkumar. He is also blessed to have learned this art from the legendary Maha-Guru Karaikudi Mani Ji.

Shri P. Vetriboopathy is a graded Mridangam artist with All India Radio and Doordarshan. He is also an empaneled solo Mridangam artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

With an illustrious career, Shri Vetri has accompanied many stalwarts of Carnatic music, including Padma Vibhushan Shri Balamurali Krishna, Padma Shri Mandolin U. Srinivas, and Kalaimamani Nithyashree Mahadevan, among many others. His artistry extends beyond Carnatic music, as he is equally popular among Hindustani musicians and actively collaborates in esteemed jugalbandi and fusion ensembles.

Apart from being a dedicated classical musician, he is also a sought-after accompanist for Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Mohiniattam performances, frequently participating in jugalbandis with other classical dance forms.

In recognition of his contributions, his documentary film was featured and released in 2023 by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) under the Dharohar series, an initiative by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Shri Vetri has traveled extensively across India and abroad, representing India at prestigious concerts and cultural events. He has been honored with numerous awards for his excellence in Carnatic percussion, including Taal-Mani, Taala-Vadhya Guru Tilagar, Taala-Vadhya Vittagar, and Taala-Laya Vidhwan Mani.

Beyond his performances, he has made a significant mark as a Guru, a rare achievement at his young age. Many of his disciples are thriving in the field of percussion.

Since 2002, Shri Vetri has been serving as the senior-most percussionist and music in-charge at the prestigious National School of Drama, under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
